In the 1958-59 season, Lincoln City had a 6ft 3in centre-back called Ray
Long and a 5ft 2in outside-left by the name of Joe Short.
Joe Payne scored a record ten goals for Luton Town in a 12-0 win over
Bristol Rovers on 13 April 1936 - but his name was not in the official
programme. He was a late change at centre-forward.

On a couple of occasions in the 1970-71 season, Torquay United substituted
defender Brian Hill with the unrelated winger Brian Hill.

At the start of the 1950-51 season all the promoted teams in the Football
League lost on the opening day, all the relegated ones were were winners and
the newly elected sides drew.

The highest number to appear on a football shirt in England was the no.96
worn by Petri Helin, captain of FC Jokerit when they played West Ham United
in the Inter-Toto Cup on 17 July 1999. The number referred to the frequency
of a radio station in Finland.
